How I Combine Magic Systems In Spellwork

Hello friends! Here is our question for the day: how are Chris Baty, Ancestry DNA, and animal bones all connected? You’re about to find out! So let’s take a journey and I’ll walk you through it.

I know it’s been a little while since I posted anything new. With the school semester and with family and several trips I’ve taken since it has just been a very busy few months! As those of you who have been following me for some time maybe aware, this is the month of our Lord and Savior Chris Baty! It’s NaNoWriMo Time!

You may be wondering what the title of this post and National Novel Writing Month have to do with one another but rest easy because I will explain it all.

This year I’m working on a series of short stories that are centered around North American cryptids (and for those of you who may not be aware, we have some weird and wacky ones, melting pot of the world that the U.S. is). Included in several of those short stories are bits and pieces of different Folk Magics, especially Appalachian Folk Magic or what is also called Granny Magic.

Weirdly specific right? But stick with me. Remember this is a journey!

When I started delving into my Ancestry DNA results and my family tree I noticed that, with the exception of a few outliers, the majority of my family has lived in the Appalachian region since my ancestors came to the US. It made me curious about what kind of traditions that they may have had and, as a practicing Pagan, what kind of belief systems they may have shared. This is what led me down the rabbit hole that is Appalachian Folk Magic!

Still with me?

Unconnected to my ancestry but still tied in with my own practice is the use of bone casting sets for divination and communicating with Spirit allies and Ancestors. My very first magical teacher other than my own intuition was a lovely lady whose own practice was very hoodoo based. Has anyone who has been a devout student of anything over time can tell you, we each end up collecting pieces of the teachings of those that have instructed us. It’s kind of like an ancestry on its own really. An ancestry of knowledge rather than blood.

So because of that influence, my own practice tends to lean into Conjure and root work just as much as it does Kemeticism and Indigenous Spiritually (thanks to my Elder, Standing Bear of the Fishing Lake First Nation).

Bone casting comes from the Conjure side of things originally. It’s something that I wasn’t very eager to get into because, and don’t make fun of me for this, it just felt very teenage edge lord for me. Like those try hard kids that try to convince people that bear real life vampires and spend too much time and Hot topic harassing the associates. If you know the kind of person I’m talking about, you know.

But regardless of my plans for my practice, Spirit will have it’s say at the end of the day and honestly the best we can do is just get out of our own way.

Now that we’ve seen how all of those things are connecting for me right now, let’s get back to the main topic at hand.

So magic systems!

What do I mean whenever I say something is a magic system? As I think of it, and Magic system is something like the use of crystals, the use of tarot or candle magic or runes. Methods of doing a working that each have their own set of rules and ways of use that are inherently disconnected from other systems and methods.

One of the things that my hoodoo teacher taught me during our first tarot class was that these magic systems don’t necessarily have to remain separate. She was a big fan of using dice casting and pendulums in conjunction with her tarot reading which I always thought was very fascinating! I’d never seen someone combine them in that way before.

Here is a picture or five of one of the spell workings I have ongoing right now.

This work has to be done consecutively for 7 days in a row for the first part of the Working and then another seven for the second part. As any good practitioner knows, I won’t be telling you what the Working is for because I don’t want to risk dispelling and undoing it after putting in so much time and effort! However that doesn’t mean that I can’t break down the pieces of the working for you to explain what’s going on and what you’re looking at.

This working in particular combines candle magic, crystals, my bone casting set, a bell and incense, the calling upon of Ancestors and Spirit Allies as well as prayer. At the base of the largest candle, between the amethyst and quartz, you’ll see I’ve left a little offering there as well for those who may come to aid me in the Working.

After all, not even Spirit wants to work for free! They will occasionally do volunteer work but everybody does their work more happily whenever they’re being paid for their services.

I’m using cards from three separate Oracle decks here: the Isis Oracle which has been a favorite of mine for many years now and was my very first Oracle deck; the Halloween Oracle deck, which is actually my go-to-deck right now; and in the center beneath my bones is a card from my Everyday Witch Oracle deck.

One of the first things you may notice about my bone casting set is that it’s not actually all bone! And it doesn’t have to be. Many bone casting sets include things like stones and fossils, both of which are present in mine, but also small knick knacks and curios. Two of the pieces that aren’t bone are actually from my great-grandmother’s sewing kit that was passed down through the women of my family and eventually made its way to me! In that way, my ancestors keep a solid foothold in any Works and castings that I use this set for.

Another piece is Blue Glass which is used for trapping nosy or invasive Spirits, and the last is a spent bullet casing. I didn’t realize till I picked it up but the small evil eye bead that is also part of the set was inside the bullet casing at the time so it’s not in the picture but it’s there! There’s also a bell because I’ve always been told that bells are the voices of the goddess on the physical plane.

The coral, stones, and fossils are pretty easy to connect with bones. The bleached coral piece and the fossils were once living things, the parts of them left behind after Time had it’s say, and what is a stone if not the bones of the very Earth itself?

Every practitioner is going to have their own opinions and beliefs as far as they’re chosen magical systems go. Some may believe that a bone set should only contain bones. Some may have no bones in their sets at all! Some may prefer not to combine methods like I do and some may combine methods that I’ve never heard of or experienced myself!

I’m always very curious to see what other people are doing and experiencing in their own practices so if you would like to please share with me here in the comments! I love learning about new methods or even new opinions on the same old tried and true ones and I’d certainly love to hear yours!

Sorry if this was a little rambly, it got away from me a little bit but I can’t help but have fun whenever I’m talking about these kinds of topics! It also doesn’t hurt that this blog post counts towards my nanowrimo word count. 50k, let’s gooooo!

Also, are you participating in this yearly writing chaos speed run? If you are, let me know and let’s do a word sprint or something!

Also also, sorry if there are any grammar or spelling mistakes. I usually try to be pretty diligent about them but after all, this is November. Editing is for next month. 😉

With Peace and Passion,
Ta! ✌️

Everyday Witch Tarot Deck: My Tarot Take-Away!

I knew from the moment that I picked this deck up that I was in complete love with it. That’s right, my peeps! Today, I bring you my feels on the Everyday Witch Tarot! At long last. Yes, I know that you’re probably wondering what the hell took me so long and that, dear Journeyers…is a very good question.

It’s been a slow few weeks, okay?

The Everyday Witch Tarot was the fourth deck that I’d bought or been gifted so I wasn’t exactly new to the cards at that point. It was a gift from Daddy Maxwell for my birthday last year after I discovered it at a local metaphysical shop.

I love using the Everyday Witch Tarot in conjunction with the Everyday Witch Oracle. It’s been reading well for me and I remember, when opening it for the first time, there was this feeling of…rightness. If you’ve ever bonded with a deck, you’ll know exactly what I mean. That’s not to say that everyone will mesh well with the Everyday Witch tarot. Every person is different, every deck is different, every witch is different. For me, though, this one is golden!

The scenes and characters have both a medieval fantasy yet somehow modern feel to them, the colors bright and images beautifully illustrated. Another creation of the talented Elizabeth Alba and written by Deborah Blake, this deck is a point of pride for any tarot collector’s hoard. I love the motorcycle riding Chariot card!

My only point of contention would be the lack of diversity in the characters and art. I love the quirkiness of it all and the cats that feature somewhere in almost every card. However, there’s a certain repetition in it. It’s very…white. Given the wide breadth of witches from cultures worldwide (is there any culture that doesn’t have the witch in one form or another?), it would have been so cool to see the hoodoo queens of the south and the bokor of Haiti.

I do think it’s fascinating that each suit tells a story. This was something I knew was true of the Rider-Waite tarot but the Everyday Witch deck makes it far easier to suss out that narrative for the average reader.

Needless to say, the Everyday Witch decks have quickly become my go-to decks, pushing my standard Rider-Waite to the side with little trouble at all. It’s, without a doubt, the one I reach for time and time again. The light, fun illustrations are simply magical and I hope to enjoy the Everyday Witch Tarot and Oracle decks, as well as Deborah Blake and Elizabeth Alba’s other products, for many years to come!

With Peace and Passion.

The Everyday Witch Oracle: A Deck To Die For!

Hello, hello! We are back with another tarot deck review this week! Today, we are taking a look at ~le gasp~ The Everyday Witch Oracle deck!

Now, if you are unfamiliar with this particular deck, don’t be too hard on yourself. The oracle deck itself only came out in September of 2019, while it’s companion deck, the Everyday Witch Tarot, released in January of 2017. Both are written by Deborah Blake and the art is designed by Elizabeth Alba. The wonderful Llewellyn published both decks as well.

A terrific trio of a team for this tantalizing tarot!

Now say that shit five times fast!

This deck is full to bursting with its diversity! Unlike the Everyday Witch Tarot which features primarily women and cats, this Oracle deck features witches of different genders, ages, races, and orientations.

I’m talking about you, Love Card, with your handfasting between two lady witches! Such a beautiful card!

Speaking practically, I like that while the cards in this deck are larger than in their tarot companion, the guidebook is actually smaller and practically pocket size! It makes it much easier to carry around for on the go readings and study, something that I found quite handy.

The EWO is divided into four groups based on element (with the first three of each “suit”) as follows:

*Earth (for grounding and practical action)-
              – Earth Magic
              -Connect With Gaia
              -Hibernation and Regeneration
*Air (for thought and communication)-
              – Air Magic
              – Imagination and Envision
              – Listening to Wisdom
*Fire (creativity and passion)-
              – Fire Magic
              – Sun and Stars
              – Accept Love
*Water (change and movement)-
              – Water Magic
              – Healing Waters
              – Cleansing Body and Spirit

And so on. You’ll have to buy the deck to know the rest of the cards but I can assure you, it’s worth it!

If you are trying to sort through your deck and put each elemental group in order of progression, then using the chapter 3 ‘How the cards progress’ section of the book may be a little confusing. I read through this book from the beginning, naturally, and got horribly confused reading chapter 3. Worry not dear adventurer! Simply skip ahead to chapter 5 and you’ll find not only a concise order for each grouping but what each of the cards meanings are!

I’m in love with the concept of a Maiden, Mother, Crone three card spread! Deborah Blake shares this gem of a spread on page 20 so check it out! She also shares several other ways that you can read with this deck that were marvelous additions to my card spread know-how.

I was over the moon when, in chapter 6, the author shares ways that you can incorporate the Everyday Witch Oracle deck with the Everyday Witch Tarot deck, it’s companion deck. Of course both can be used separately but I love the idea of using them together! Especially since the Everyday Witch deck is my tarot OTP. It is legitimately my jam. In fact, I’ve started pulling a card from each deck every morning as a sort of ritual to start my day.

So whether you use oracle decks already or are simply wanting to get a fun and interesting feel for them, I cannot recommend the Everyday Witch Oracle enough. It’s set up is interesting, it’s illustrations are beautiful, and it features cards with people and animals of all kinds.

I would love to see more wonderful Everyday Witch wares from this team in the future!

With Peace and Passion.

Ta! ❤

The Everyday Witch Oracle can be purchased at Amazon, Llewellyn.com, and Barnes and Noble. Don’t forget to check your local metaphysical shops as well! #shoplocal!

Spilling The Tea With The Tarot: Empress

The Empress card from the Thoth Tarot.

So this post taught me the importance f backing up your writing rather than simply typing it directly into the WP document program. This is the second time I’ve had to slog through this one and let me tell you, for some reason, this deep dive was difficult for me. I don’t know why but either way, we’re back! Thank the gods too because the holidays can be one serious drain on the soul sometimes, you know? I did get a few new decks, however, and that’s brought us back to Spilling The Tea With The Tarot! Man, oh man, do I have some cool stuff coming down the line here on our Journey so make sure you subscribe and follow to be notified!

Now brew up a cup of today’s tea, a fruity and fragrant raspberry lemon blend by Celestial Seasonings, and join us as we delve into the Empress and all she has to offer.

Our lovely Empress is the third that the Fool encounters on his journey. She is the epitome of feminine strength and divinity. She is the archetypal mother we all want to be. Hair shining in the sun, gown artfully arranged around her, and sitting on a throne in a field of blossoms and fruit, she is everything every mother on earth aspires to be. She represents abundance and the divine feminine that resides inside all of us, whether we be male, female, or nonbinary. The Empress leads us to embrace it!

What are you growing in the fertile soil of your life right now? Are you nurturing it abundantly? Are you giving all of your energies into whatever job or prospect you are undertaking but leaving none leftover for yourself or for family? Are you working you passions like a job so much that they become more a chore than anything, the joy stripped away? Well then you need to pluck those weeds out of your life, those bad habits and stresses that steal your joy! Take a golden leaf from the Empress’s book and rain self-care and possibility all over that shit!

Don’t let your inner Man get you down!

With Peace and Passion.

Spilling The Tea With The Tarot: High Priestess

High Priestess card from the Universal Goddess deck!

Feeling mysterious? Wanting to get in touch with your inner power and mystic knowledge? Brew up a cup of Dryad Tea’s black tea blend, Raven’s In The Library! It’s a personal favorite of mine that I bought from their vendor booth at GenCon Indianapolis. Their website (dryadtea.com) says this about this fascinating blend: “Inspired by a song of SJ Tucker this tea is a delightful blend of a creamy earl grey. More like a Lady Grey tea than anything, this blend is calm and mischievous all at once.”

I know, I know, I already did one earl grey but come on! I’m just a sucker for some bergamot, I guess.

Speaking of the mysterious and inner power, today we welcome the High Priestess to our tarot table!

Isn’t this depiction of the Egyptian goddess Isis just stunning? In the Kemetic religion/Egyptian mythology, Isis is the goddess of motherhood, magic, death and rebirth, and healing. She is known as the Goddess of 10,000 names, high priestess of the dog star, divine guardian, keeper of the Mysteries, and Queen of the Celestial Crescent. Basically she is one badass chick! Can you tell I’m a bit of a fan?

But back to the High Priestess!

The visuals for the Rider-Waite High Priestess incorporate a far cooler color scheme than her male counterpart. Two pillars, one black and the other white, stand to either side of her, each bearing a letter B and J. She wears a crown very reminiscent of the cow horned crown of Isis with a blue robe over a white gown that always reminded me of the Virgin Mary. On her chest is a cross and in her hands is a script of the TORA. At her back, a curtain of pomegranates and at her feet, a crescent moon.

She stands as the companion and polarization to the High Priest, the second to be encountered on the Fool’s journey of life. She is the holder of inner and hidden wisdom. Her crown and garb marks her as a ruler with ties to the divine, the TORA signifying her knowledge of the external and internal.

There are symbols of the divine feminine all over the place. The crescent moon at her feet had long been tied to the sacred feminine through moon goddesses such as Diana, Artemis, and our lady of the day, Isis herself. The pomegranates are both a divine feminine symbol with their ties to the goddess Persephone but also a sign of fertility and plenty.

As far as a reading goes, the High Priestess can be a call to look inward at what lies within yourself. She stands as a reminder of the neutrality of knowledge and also as a warning not to look at things as too black and white. Life is never so simple! Step back and look at your thoughts or actions and see if maybe you’ve been trying to view things in terms too much through the lense of good and bad. She tells us that hidden mysteries are available to us but they won’t just fall into our lap, we have to be actively seeking them out.

Tl;dr- Empower yourself! Get off of your but and look for the answers you seek! Life is grey not black and white so always mind the golden rule and don’t be a dick.

With Peace and Passion.

Spilling The Tea With Tarot: The Magician

The Golden Tarot Magician

Spilling the Tea with the Tarot: The Magician

Hello all of my malfeasance-manufacturers, daily diviners, and curiosity conjurers! Today here at Little Journeys, we are drinking deeply of the Magician as well as a fine cup of Zhena’s Gypsy Tea’s Indian White tea! The description on Zhena’s Amazon (linked below) for this product is ‘it’s long, spear like ivory-green tips with russet hue brews a complex cup offering fresh grassy notes with an undertow of malty spice’. It is a stunning blend with a lovely aroma that is just perfect for those moments of peace and tranquility. Definitely check it out!

Now let’s get our wand waving game on and take a peek at the Magician!

The Magician is the card numbered as ‘one’ in the tarot (even though we know it is not the penultimate card in the deck). It is another colorful card with bright yellows and reds. Our titular magus is surrounded but fertile, lush flowers denoting the manifestation and inspiration that this card brings to the table. He is crowed by a symbol for infinity and, in the Rider-Waite, is wearing a belt of an ouroboros or a serpent eating it’s own tail. This card typically features a symbol of each of the tarot’s suits: the pentacles, the swords, the wands, and the cups, or your deck theme equivalents. Why is this? After all, our dear Magician is the only card in the tarot that features this. The only one out of an entire seventy-two card deck. So what’s with that?

Well the Magician is a card that encompasses not only the emotional aspects of our life but the mental and physical. The spiritual and material. The four elements denoted by the four suits. The Magician brings to a reading a meaning of self-actualization, inner power, creative inspiration and manifestation, as well as resourcefulness.

Where does the Magician stand in the story of the Fool and his journey?

He stands as an opposing but equal balance to the power of the High Priestess, the card that follows in the Major Arcana. He and his feminine counterpart are the first experiences the Fool encounters with the Magician as the masculine force of your inner mojo. He is the light that shows the outward manifestations of our journey. Things such as achieving your goals of going somewhere or doing something.

He’s an active dude with his fingers in a lot of different pies and if he comes up in a reading, he’s telling you to just do it. Don’t let your dreams just be dreams, ya frikkin’ dreamer, you! The Magician is a good sign that whatever you are asking, the time is now and the answer is a resounding yes! In the Everyday Witch Tarot, the Magician is headlines with these words:

“The Magic Is Inside Of You.”

And it is! Like the Magician, you have everything you need to get it done. You just have to take that leap of faith in yourself and go for it! #GettinItDoneWithTheMagician, am I right?

With Peace and Passion.

Spilling The Tea With Tarot: The Fool

The Fool in me is digging with gusto into a piping hot cup of Earl Grey with a rosemary sprig steeped alongside the bag. Definitely an all time favorite that I 10 out of 10 would recommend. Give it a try!

And speaking of giving it a try, welcome to Part Zero of our journey through the Tarot cards’ Major Arcana! We are starting our count with zero because that is where our Major Leagues Tarot Team game begins, at the count of zero and The Fool.

Now, we hear the title of the Fool card and think of it immediately as an insult, associating it with the meaning ‘a silly or stupid person’. However, in earlier centuries, this word did not have the same sort of derision or disdain that we commonly tag it with in modern times. Looking at The Fool card, one notices a few things right away.

Cheerful looking, right? It’s a bright card with yellows and oranges and blues (despite our picture being in black and white). The sun is shining, the Fool is holding a flower with his face basking upward in the excited freedom that is a new adventure. He has a four-legged companion and modest knapsack to carry all that he’ll need.

The Fool doesn’t heed the looming mountains to the back or the cliff at his feet (though maybe he should). This card stands without numerical value in the storyline of the Tarot and yes! There is a story! It is said that the Major Arcana is the Fool’s own life journey through time, gaining experience through trials and tribulations. Therefore, he needs no number, since the Major Arcana details his story!

But what about your story? What does the Fool card mean for a reading?

Traditionally, the Fool card signifies innocence, naitivity, and the starting of a new journey. Opportunities and potential! So be like the Fool and commit to your new adventure with a sense of enthusiasm and wonder. Embrace the unknown!

A word of experience though that many long-time readers will tell you. The future is not set in stone. I myself have done a reading where the Fool encouraged exploration and potential but to be cautious of leading the ones following you into a perilous drop off of a metaphorical cliff. Just like the card, the little dog follows the Fool with faith and loyalty, unaware of the edge his friend leads him along to.

When it comes to doing readings for yourself, the important thing is to follow your intuition. Keep card meanings in mind though don’t cling to them so hard that you’re not listening to what your intuition may be telling you.

Until next time on Spilling the Tea with the Tarot when we interview the Magician card!

With Peace and Passion.

Spilling the Tea with the Tarot: A New Series

Hello all! Here in on Little Journeys, we are going to be taking a deep dive into the Tarot card type of divination. More specifically, the Major Arcana!

And what would make spilling the tea on the Tarot even better? Actual tea!

So each day that we dip our spoons into a cup of spooptastic Tarot terrific-ness, we will be enjoying a different steeped something or another. Let those tannins tickle your tastebuds and join us here in our journey through the Major Arcana!

Some of you may be wondering, all tea aside, what is Tarot? And what the hekkin Hernandez is the Major Arcana?

For you veterans to Tarot lore, I won’t be getting into all of the correspondences and archetypes, but on the meanings of the cards as a whole. For those of you who are looking for a more esoteric history dive, check out this truly awe-inspiring piece by Christine Payne-Towler over at tarot.com (https://www.tarot.com/tarot/christine-payne-towler/history-of-tarot)! Her research into what exactly went from it’s birth in the 1400’s and developed into what we now know as Tarot today is just stunning.

So, what is Tarot?

Tarot is a system of reading the meanings and connections between cards to gain insight into…well, anything really. Some use it as a tool to gain wisdom or advice for present issues. Others may use the cards to look into their future paths. Others still use the Tarot as a way to set up a mirror for their innermost turmoils. After all, from a psychological standpoint, we tend to see the things that our consciousness is projecting. Being able to see our thought patterns reflected back at us allows for a self-exploration that we may not be able to achieve through other means. Whether you are interested in card reading because of the mystical or because of the psychological, the next step is understanding more about the deck itself!

Tarot decks are divided into what are called the Major and Minor Arcana, the former boasting 22 cards and the latter with an impressive 56 for a total of 72 cards per deck.

Just like a playing card deck, the Minors are divided into 4 suites with 14 cards per suite. Suits are called by the titles pentacles, swords, cups, and wands, though different themed decks maybe have variations on these.

The Major Arcana features no suits but instead 22 different cards. They are as follows, in order of assigned number:

     0. The Fool

  1. The Magician
  2. The High Priestess
  3. The Empress
  4. The Emperor
  5. The Hierophant
  6. The Lovers
  7. The Chariot
  8. Strength
  9. The Hermit
  10. The Wheel of Fortune
  11. Justice
  12. The Hanged Man
  13. Death
  14. Temperance
  15. The Devil
  16. The Tower
  17. The Star
  18. The Moon
  19. The Sun
  20. Judgement
  21. The World

The Rider-Waite variation of the Tarot is the deck that most comes to people’s minds (though they may not know its name or that it but one of hundreds). I’ve always found the Rider-Waite to be too severe aesthetically, however, there are many many others that you may find yourself drawn to just as well. The Shadowscapes deck was my very first, followed by my Rider-Waite which was a gift from Daddy Maxwell. I’ve since grown my collection and at the moment, the deck I most often reach for is the more modern, slightly kitschy Everyday Witch Tarot. There are decks that feature cats, elves, deities. I’ve had my eye on the Egyptian Tarot for a while now but there are even ones devoted to themes like the late Ziggy Stardust, Erotica, Food, and even a deck for Conspiracies.

So whichever deck suits your mood and jiggles your jams, join us here on the next sip of Spilling the Tea with the Tarot when we turn over a cup of The Fool card and see what the leaves read in store for us!

With Passion and Peace.

Ta! ❤
