Stardust: A Pagan Children’s Book From The Beautiful Heart of Ginger Ackley

Hello, Hello! I know it’s been a while since you’ve heard from me, but I wanted to share something very special with you today! Don’t worry, it’s not a course or anything like that! Cue the relieved sighs.

A very, very special lady that is near and dear to my heart is sharing a Pagan children’s book she’s written, and I wanted to tell you about it. It’s pretty difficult to find specifically Pagan kids books so, with a little witchling myself, I was pretty interested in her book, Stardust.

It’s based on a song we sing on Wednesday nights during our Circle, Enchantica (every Wednesday night at 6pm CST on FB) and is a beautiful and wonderful creation story. The illustrations are cute and cartoony, perfect for kids, and were created by rising artist, John Lollar!

As Ginger has written herself: “This is the enchanting story of Creation as the Little Goddess sits in the Time Before Time, in the Dark Before Dark. She holds out her hand and there is only one tiny, sparkling mote of Stardust! With illustrations that are completely enchanting, generations of children will cherish this book and the timeless story it tells! Perfect for parents to read at bedtime – and great for kids to read on their own, too!”

I hope you enjoy Stardust as much as we are going to! I can’t wait to add it to our bookshelf and our rotation of bedtime stories! 🙂

Stardust is available for pre-order now here: Stardust – The Book | Ginger Ackley’s Music

Wintertime Forest Finds

We decided to explore an entirely unknown part of our home forest today! We’ve been talking a bit of a break from traditional homeschooling and are leaning a bit on our unschooling/relaxed schooling at the moment. Little Maxwell was just getting so frustrated, overwhelmed, and downtrodden by it all and since we don’t usually do a summer vacation or many of the usual “off days” that the public school does, we figured it couldn’t hurt to give her some time. A day out in the forest was just what we needed and what luck! It was warm as could be: in the high sixties!

In January!

Not wholly unusual in our great state of Tennessee. The weather here is bonkers, yo.

Even in the depths of our woods there was evidence of man’s destructive impulses. 😞
She stuck her finger in the mud. xD
We discovered a whole field we’d never been to before! I found what I believe may be a cat skull and bones but haven’t identified them for sure yet. They are unphotographed.
A new plant I discovered!

A Lament For The Little Ones Lost

People watch as a convoy of truckers and other vehicles travel in front of the former Kamloops Indian Residential School in support of the Tk’emlups te Secwepemc people after the remains of 215 children were discovered buried near the facility, in Kamloops, Canada, on June 5, 2021. – Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on June 4 urged the Catholic Church to “take responsibility” and release records on indigenous residential schools under its direction, after the discovery of remains of 215 children in unmarked graves. A Lament For The Little Ones Lost

Little Ones, we bring you home

from your earthy bed,

Treated so poorly thus in life,

In Mother Earth you rest your head.

Snatched and clawed from your mothers’ arms,

Beaten down, mistreated,

Hurts beyond past numbering,

Your dead now reach far passed alarm.

Innumerable crimes have gone untold,

Tears as the tide come in,

Little voices in the wind,

Their sweet lights now forever cold.

With Ancestors and Mother you now do dwell,

In that “Residential” grave.

We’ll bring you home, now don’t you cry,

Always know, this isn’t farewell.

For our Ceremony never ends,

Our Wheel is ever turning.

Always in prayer for Little Ones lost,

Sisters, Brothers, Relatives, and Friends.

This Has Been My TED Talk: Children’s Bodily Autonomy

Alright so I wrote this back in October and it’s taken me this long to pay it. Why? Honestly, I was afraid of the shit talking backlash I’d get from people. Let’s all just go into this with mutual respect and understanding that we all have our own opinions and plans for childrearing, okay? Sweet. Let’s do this.

There’s this bizarre idea in our culture that children don’t have the right to be considered real people. That they shouldn’t get a say in what happens to them and that they don’t have rights over their bodies. I don’t know where that came from but it is so bizarre to me.

Like… No, my kid does not get a say in what time she goes to bed because for her age and developmental stage that is what is appropriate and what has proven for her to be best for her general well-being during the course of the day. However, even in things where she doesn’t get much of a choice, I still give her as much say in it as possible. I take her feelings and thoughts into consideration.

I let her make decisions where I’m able to because if kids aren’t given the chance to learn how to make good decisions then they never figure out how to, and then they start adulthood out with the expectation that they should be able to do these things because they are adults when nobody ever bothered to teach them how.

For example, my daughter had to change occupational therapists a few months ago from the one that she’d been seeing for many many months. Her new OT is good but my daughter just didn’t take to the change and has been very resistant to the therapies since. So much so that not much therapy gets done. After her last appointment she told me that she didn’t want to do OT anymore and I thought about it and was like, “you know, maybe you’re right. Maybe it is time to take a little bit of a break.”

Taking her thoughts, opinions, and considerations into mind instead of just saying, “no this is what’s good for you you’re going to do it whether you like it or not” allowed me to see the situation from her perspective. And from the perspective of her desperately frustrated OT.

Bless you, Autumn.

Our kids are people. We are not raising children, we are raising adults, right? We don’t want them to still be children when they go out into the world, we want them to be healthy in mind, emotion, and body as adults. But if we don’t give them those opportunities, then we fail as parents in our ultimate goal: to raise them to be established adults.

I know this has been a bit of a ramble so thanks for sitting through it with me.

This has been my TED talk.

A Field Trip To The Nashville Zoo!

I know, I know! It’s taken a year and a day to get this post out! Honestly, it’s taken me this long just because this post is a long one (I took a lot of pictures!) and I just didn’t have the spoons in me to dedicate to it.

But here we are! Finally!

We visited the Nashville Zoo at grassmere at the beginning of this month had a wonderful time! If you’re planning on visiting Nashville Zoo yourself, see you the end of this post for some of my tips to help you have the best trip you can have!

Do you see why it took me so long now?

But, as promised, here are some of my tips that I have picked up from the few trips I’ve made to the zoo at this point!

  1. Don’t forget the sunscreen, especially if you have little ones.
  2. The Nashville Zoo does allow you to bring snacks and such in so definitely don’t forget to bring some treats for your walk and maybe even think about a picnic! Zoo food can get expensive, especially if you have more than one child! 💲💲💸💸
  3. If you have one, take a wagon. They’re invaluable for curtailing tired and whiny small children and carrying bags.
  4. Take extra money for the carousel or special treats!
  5. Consider a season pass if you’re a person who likes to visit the zoo more than a time or two. It also gives you special perks for things like ticket costs and the carousel. 🙂

I hope you enjoyed this gigantic post on our field trip to the Nashville Zoo! Please like and consider following for more posts to come!

Snapshots of Our Summer Days

A little breath of beautiful on your desk goes a long way.

Why not put a little bit of beautiful everywhere? Anywhere you have a long and laborious task to do, put something that uplifts your spirit and it can make the task seem much easier than it did before. 🙂

First Girl Scouts badge! We do Little Maxwell’s Girl Scouts virtually so her bad just come in the mail when she earns them! 🙂 For those of you who have always thought about scouts for your own littles but didn’t think you could make meetings or events, now just might be the perfect time to give it a shot. The scouts have set up everything virtually now and even did a virtual camp this summer! Very fun!

We’ve been finding planets in the night sky the last few weeks and when we find a new one, Little Maxwell gets to color in the planet on these drawings we did! 🙂 We’re going to start doing constellations next!

Missing and murdered indigenous women or MMIW is a cause that I feel really passionate about and that really needs some intense recognition. I will be doing a post on this coming up soon but I’m hoping to get some interviews from women in the indigenous community for it. Since I am intensely Caucasian, I’m not able to be a part of that community and so it doesn’t seem right to talk about such an important issue myself without the voices of the community as the forefront. But for those of you who want to learn more about this in the meantime, I urge you please to look into it. Not only has covet hit their populations intensely hard but the lost women of the indigenous community need help. No woman and any community should have to be afraid of becoming a victim.

She drew me, her, and a heart. :3

Lego Unikitty! Legos are a great way to add counting, creative play, sorting, as well as other math skills into your play. 🙂 We are a big lover of Legos in our house.

Rainy day play day!

Using our nature book, we believe that this nest is for grackle eggs!

A lunch out with family doesn’t have to mean not being safe!

A State Park & Our Latest Snapshots!

These are some snaps from our last month of our unschooling and homesteading journey! We took a field trip to one of our local state parks this month so join us on our adventure! Maybe you’ll get some ideas for things to do with your own children or even for yourself. Ta!

This was an activity about dental hygiene. Learning about how to care for our teeth! We started with some yellow and orange squares for teeth, an old toothbrush and some white “toothpaste”paint! Lots of fun!
Our blueberries! Little Maxwell’s new favorite outside snack. 🙂
This is a really cool dry erase kindergarten learning book. 🙂 Today, we practiced letters and numbers!
Our first tomato flowers! Our whole homestead is in bloom and every day things are different. Bigger, brighter, and more magnificent than the day before. Every day is a new treasure to feast the spirit upon!

These are our snapshots from our morning spent at Radnor Lake State Park! The area truly was a vision of beauty, a wildlife reserve for so many species! We saw so many wonderful things and I would love to go back! Maybe on a day when the temperature wasn’t set to Broil though!

Nothing says ‘FUN’ like adventures with friends!
A bracket fungus! I…think. Honestly, I’d never seen one like this so if anyone can chime in, please do!
A particularly droopy mushroom on a fallen tree!
This was an enormous uprooted tree! This black snake found it to be a particularly nice resting place.
While watching these turtles, we ended up counting ten of them! There were so many hanging out on these looks in the water that I couldn’t even get them all in frame.
“Exxxcusssse me. Do you have time to hear about our lord and ssssssavior, Lord Voldemort?”
The Littles were so concerned because they thought this little worm-friend was hurt. ❤️

We had such a wonderful adventure together! I would definitely recommend seeing if you have any state or national park nearby. It really makes for an amazing and educational day!

With Peace and Passion!
